After some thought….I have decided to give up……chips, salsa, and queso at Mexican Food joints….or at home…MY BIGGEST downfall is this when I go out to eat…..Usually I am pretty good at giving something up and keeping it up AFTER LENT…but we’ll see about this one….Buena suerte….Please…comment back and share what YOU are giving up for lent this year…

I appreciate that you are willing to participate in Lent and believe me I am not trying to disparage your preparation for Easter, but if you look historically at how Christians have traditionally fasted during this time it is often shocking, especially for our society. Traditionally, Lent, also known as the Great Fast, was a time of sacrificing certain foods and activities to prepare oneself and make room for more Godly things. As far as dietary restrictions from the earliest centuries on Christians have been taught to give up meat and dairy products (As far as I know only the Orthodox Christian Church continues in this practice). Activities that can be given up are movies and TV. These are replaced with reading spiritual works like the Ladder of Divine Ascent by John Climacus and increasing your prayers. Just to give up something is not the point. Rather it is the denial of oneself in order to receive Christ and understand His resurrection on Easter when the triumphant message is proclaimed: “Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death.”
